Back in June, I started two different tartan inspired quilts, one from the MacLachlan Clan, and the other from the Cameron Clan. Both are now finished! They are made from up-cycled men’s plaid shirts which I buy in bulk and then combine into color groups.
As I was designing MacLachlan, I chose to show more of the repeat so the pattern undulates across the quilt. Each plaid fabric corresponds to a different color in the original woven sample.
With Cameron, I zoomed in and enlarged the scale so not even a single full repeat of the original plaid is represented.
Breaking down each tartan design and rebuilding it in quilt form has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of each design’s base foundation.
Almost like building it back up one thread at a time.
