Over the past couple of months, I have had the pleasure of creating a set of two memorial quilts for a woman whose mother, Genevieve, passed away in 2013. Genevieve was known for her lively sense of humor and her dedication to nursing. Taking seven of Genevieve’s garments together with a solid ivory linen, I constructed the two quilts using my Eclipse quilt pattern.
The process began with deconstructing the garments.
Then I cut them into strips,
carefully arranged the different fabrics for each block,
and pinned the pieces together.
Once the blocks are sewn into long strips,
it all comes together.
In the center of each quilt I placed a red cross made from Genevieve’s red plaid trousers as a way to honor her lifelong service as a nurse.
Even though I never knew Genevieve, it was an honor to have been able to make this quilt for her daughter and the rest of her family.
